I have to admit, I have been avoiding coming into the center of Genoa for days. The photos all over the Internet were enough to keep me away. I am generally a curious person but to see the devastation up close just makes it too personal for me.
We’ve had days of rain and flooding and one person died. The city is in chaos and there is mud everywhere. I had no choice but to come into the center today for work and one of my lessons is on the street that was most affected.
I have a lump in my throat and just want to cry. Walking around, it is impossible not to step in mud. It’s everywhere. Young people are on the streets with shovels and brooms and they are covered in it. They are called the “mud angels” because they have been volunteering non-stop cleaning up the streets.
I don’t want to go around taking photos of the devastation, it is just too depressing. I took one, and it was just too much to bear seeing all the damage and wondering if people will ever fully recover financially from it.
Stores have been closing at a rapid pace here lately and I fear that this will just add to the many problems people already face in Italy. Ok, enough sadness…life goes foreward.
