No direction

If I had my very own boy band I think I would call it NO DIRECTION.
I just spent a few weeks working on my mosaic and then I got pulled into a different direction and my mosaic suffered a great loss.

It all started when I thought I could make a mosaic in the first place. Yep, that’s right, after taking a weeklong course two years ago I was suddenly inspired to hit some rocks and get busy. In fact, the truth is, it was a great distraction from all the stuff that had been pissing me off lately 🙂

Fast-forward, I got my tools and smalti and I was on a roll. I did three mock layouts and then the final and then all hell broke loose in my world. The good news is that I couldn’t have been happier. I got invited to a photography workshop that was simply delightful!

I wrote all about the experience here. A weekend adventure that I feel fortunate to have been part of.

Moving on to my mosaic however, well, I’m a chicken and egg kinda gal. I always want to do the fun part first but I didn’t exactly plan it well and with the distraction of the photo workshop I short cut the final steps and lost my entire mosaic into a pile of crumbled rocks.

Lesson learned. Spend more time researching where to get the right materials and have them all ready before starting at all. I’m lazy. I tried to find the right materials but gave up after the first try.

Mosaics are very time sensitive. Once you start you have to keep going because otherwise they will dry up in their temporary base and you have to start all over again. (Note: there are many different methods, I’m doing the Ravenna method which is a double-reverse and a bit more complicated).

This week I’ve had a heck of a time and it’s only Wednesday. My phone broke, I found out my dad wasn’t getting any of my emails regarding my upcoming trip to Canada, the gas tank emptied just before my morning tea, and Mama has been at my doorstep at 7:00 every morning. After such a fun, zenlike weekend with Di Mackey and Helen Kerrison, I really had to work hard at staying focussed on my tasks and keep moving forward in a positive way.

The good news is that I called my dad on this free app called magicjack and got sorted out and I now have almost all the materials to start over again on my mosaic and I learned some great lessons along the way. With any luck it will be even better than the last one! These are the pics of what it looked like and I also added a photo I took from the photography workshop.

  1. Wow, it’s gorgeous! I’m so sorry you had to see it crumble, Leah. That’s just heartbreaking after all that work! But you said you can remake it, right? I hope you’ll share more about the mosaic making journey. 🙂

    • Thanks Laura! I have done it three times now and each time is a bit better so I am optimistic that I can re-do it but just not sure now that it will get done this summer. I have only two more weeks before I leave for Canada and Texas. I hope I can because it will be very gratifying if I do…if I don’t have any more distractions, lol
