Mexican speed bumps

Did you know that the old ropes to tie the ship to the pier are recycled and used as speed bumps in Mexico?

I’m on my last cruise and it’s raining again. I would like to say that my life is glamourous and all but it’s not all massages and facials. Okay, I did do that but mostly because it was raining and there wasn’t much else to do. I have read two and a half books and mastered three stars on almost every level of Candy Crush! Yeah, I know, get a life already.

So back to Cozumel, Mexico. I remember when the end of the pier was just a dirt parking lot with thatched roof huts…oh, those were the good old days. I had great ambitions to learn Spanish. Obviously that plan didn’t pan out too well.

Mexico has changed a lot over the years and so have I. I walk by Fat Tuesdays and wonder where all my drunk collegues have gone. The ship leaves so early now that no one seems to have time to drown themselves in cheap beer and sloppy dance moves. Like I said, those were the good old days.

Everywhere I turn, changes have been made to “make more money”. The ship leaves earlier to get more revenue at the bars and casinos. The Mexicans hollar out for you to come inside and buy something because you are the only ship in town when there usually is 6 or 7.

The longer I am in Italy, the starker the contrasts are to me between North America and Europe. While I see Italy’s economy struggling to keep up, part of me is happy that it hasn’t lost the true essence of life. People still seem to understand the importance of family and quality of life while North Americans work like dogs to keep up with fancy lifestyles with very little time off to enjoy it.

In three days I will be back on Italian soil. Just me and Coco and by the end of the month my husband should be joining us. Just in time for olive season and with any luck my bean garden and squash plants survived the wild boars and Mama!

Mama has been staying with Coco in the house in Portofino. She has added a TV in our living room and Lord knows what other surprises I will find when I get back. I instructed her to not change anything but we all know how well she listens to me. I just hope the walls aren’t painted that awful peach colour she seems so fond of!

Sorry no photos this time. I have limited internet access onboard and the connection is super slow. See you soon.
