Mama is great but she could never replace my Mom

Today is Mother’s Day in the U.K. Italians and North Americans celebrate this day on the second Sunday of May. But I got to thinking that I don’t really talk about my mom on my blog and so today seemed like as good a day as any to do that.

My mom is in a lot of ways like Mama. She is cool and eccentric and a very interesting person. She has lived a full life and continues to do so in her retirement. She is no hunched back granny and in some ways I think it would be really cool if one day her and Mama met. They would probably get along fabulously!

I don’t get to see her much because she lives on a small island in the Caribbean. Recently, one of my student’s said that they were curious to see what my mom looked like so I dug up an old photo of her when she was roughly my age. In fact, I think in this picture, with my niece, my mom is in her early 50’s…I’m not quite there yet but at 47 I’m pretty close.

My mom is also a writer and blogger. Are you surprised? I didn’t think you would be, she has been silently grooming me to blog probably my whole life. My mom has always been a great story teller and I always loved it when she would regale funny stories about our past, when we were kids.

When I was ten years old I remember telling her that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. She never discouraged that dream but somewhere along the way I got lost and it has taken me many years to get back to the roots of that dream.

She doesn’t have an Italian mother-in-law but she has many adventures just the same living on the island. I’m sure she would love it, if you dropped by and said hello 🙂 Her blog is: www.sunsetsisters.wordpress.com
