Sant’Anna Procession

In the last few weeks with my kitchen window wide open I have noticed a strange murmur of voices just beyond my viewpoint. I curiously wondered where it was coming from because it was almost creepy to listen to.

As I made my way home tonight I was followed by a priest and two nuns. I knew something was up because earlier in the week I noticed a flyer taped to my apartment door and realized that those voices were a weekly prayer group out in the local Piazza every Tuesday night.

Tonight was the final one because it was only for the month of May and today is the 31st. I listened for the chanting to start but suddenly I realized that it was coming from my bedroom window, not the kitchen. I rushed to open the shutters and that was when the magic appeared before me!

At least 60 people were making a procession down the ancient staircase just outside my bedroom window! They had crosses and candles and the entire scene was stunning. Their voices echoed throughout the narrow ancient corridor and I struggled with taking photos or joining them.

Before I knew it they had reached the bottom and started to sing. It was all very magical and made me feel euphoric. It is times like these that I truly love Italy and all her wonder.
