Smart phone/Dumb operator

First, let me just say that I love technology. I really do! I think that gadgets are fun and cool, but to be honest, the novelty for me ran out years ago. Sure, there are new, more exciting things on the market these days but I just want my gadget to do its task and be done with it.

I used to be one of those “Type A” personalities with 2 mobile phones and 1 of them even followed me to the gym (when of course I actually went). But since I left the big city of Toronto I have found my need for these devices has waned considerably and I am afraid I have even adopted my husband’s attitude of leaving the phone somewhere in the house under a pile of newspapers while I putter outside in the garden. After all, who wants to be disturbed while plucking weeds anyways? This is important stuff that requires a high level of concentration and usually a fresh cocktail, no?

Recently, all the rage has been about iPads, iPhones, etc. I’ve seen them, they are really cool, and really out of my price range…besides, it would be a huge waste of resources for me to own such devices for the following reasons:

  1. I’ve already had 2 mobile phones stolen (seriously)
  2. I fried my $300 Palm Pilot by plugging it into a European outlet without a converter
  3. I had to replace my uber-cool Sony phone because I dropped it so many times the one end was dangling by a wire!
  4. I just got a “Smart Phone” as a birthday gift and so far it has proven that it is indeed smarter than me (it only took a month to figure out how to change the ring tone)
  5. I think I made my point!
So, although I did cave and got an eReader last summer, I bought the simplest (i.e. cheapest) model on the market. I’ve got a laptop computer so why the heck would I need a G3 wireless blah blah blah on the darn thing? And now I’ve got a perfectly fine pink phone sitting in a drawer because someone thought I needed to be/look cool/smart and get a fancy smart phone. Don’t get me wrong, the gift was very nice and thoughtful, but now what am I to do with the old one? I doubt very much my husband wants a pink phone and he is quite happy with his dual band model so who am I to argue that point?
With my dumb luck, I’ll give the old phone away, then someone will steal my new phone (strike 3 and you’re out), and then I will be phoneless…hmmm, is that such a bad thing I wonder?
