One of my least favourite things about travelling is jet lag. Wide awake at 3:00 a.m. is not my idea of fun and the older I get the harder it is. Yesterday I had lunch plans with Elora so I was desperate for some shut-eye and popped a Tylenol PM only to find myself blurry at 11:00 a.m. making a somewhat drunken sounding phone call cancelling our lunch date. I then proceeded to sleep until mid afternoon!
Tonight I took the pill earlier and even drank a cup of chamomile tea and yet once again I’m wide awake at 3:00 a.m. It’s just one of those things that you cannot rush and like everything else about me, my body seems to be just as stubborn. I envy my husband who can come home after a 4 month contract and bounce right into the rhythm of 3 course meals and sleeping like a baby after 1 day home. I guess he’s had more practice. My sister does shift work and it’s the same for her, lots of years of practice, although I also know she can be a bit of a bear when coming off a week of nights and right now I can truly empathize.
At least work at the school is not yet in full swing and I can ease into my changed time zone without wanting to kill someone. In the meantime I think I better force myself into a long walk tomorrow to burn off all this excess energy. I would put on my trainers now and go for a spell but it’s dark outside and I have no idea how safe it would be. If anyone has any suggestions I’m all ears!
