Finally free Wifi that doesn’t block WordPress! I’m sitting in a rocking chair at Charlotte, North Carolina airport waiting for my connection to Rome. The bitter-sweet parting this morning came with the usual lump in my throat and blurred vision but I managed to bite back the tears so my husband wouldn’t worry about me. Last night I got flowers and it almost made it impossible for me to continue packing.
I kept asking myself why am I not staying longer? It’s so hard to be torn between having a life of my own and being with the one I love most. I vow in my future to balance these things a bit better because hanging out with my husband is really great.
Anyways, for now I must accept the facts and mentally prepare myself for the next three months alone. I’m excited to see Stelle and Rocky. I’ve got a driver’s exam to take that admittedly I have not met my goal of finishing the book. I got half way through and found myself dozing off and striking up conversations with vacationers on deck. What can I say? I get really friendly when I’m trying to avoid doing work.
Truth be told though, this is the first time I’ve made an effort to chat with guests on the ship. As a past crew member I’ve never been terribly inspired to talk to guests after having served them for so many years. But this time I took a chance and I’m glad that I did. I met some wonderful people and my life is richer for the experience. I had to laugh at some people’s reaction when they learned who I was. It seems that being the Staff Captain’s wife is a bit like royalty to guests… kinda weird.
And while I was studying Italian (actually more like cursing at the computer a lot) in the crew training centre I’m pretty sure I managed to impress the crew members by painting myself as the “potty mouthed Staff Captain’s wife” too. It’s a good thing these guys have a sense of humour!
All in all I did feel like I had finally outworn my welcome (with the crew not my husband) and it was time to pack it up and move on to the next chapter. As expected my suitcase was bulging at the seams but luckily I was able to stash away some summer stuff in my husband’s trunk…so don’t be surprised if I start asking random questions next summer like “where the heck is my blue bikini anyways?”
I better hit the publish button now…I’m well past nap time and already missing Oprah and Ellen. Time to hit Starbuck’s one last time!
