Batman and Robin

Sadly, I found a dead robin on the veranda last week. It’s late in the season to see these birds and Lord only knows what happened to him. Probably one of the cats got to him, although he didn’t look like he had been in any kind of battle. His feathers were mostly in tact and he was more or less ignored.

As part of nature and living in the country not only do we get to experience the joys of owls calling in the night but we also have to tolerate the wild boar sneaking into the property and tearing up the earth and destroying the yard. Ancient stone walls have been demolished by these beasts and the locals are all quite fed up with having to build bigger, stronger fences each year. Not wanting the place to look like a fortress it is sometimes hard to balance the esthetics with nature and the necessity of barriers. I suppose you could argue the point of who was here first? Us or them?

Anyways, on to my next adventure, which was quite fitting for our full moon and Halloween spirit, although if I didn’t know better I would think someone was playing a prank on me because I found a dead bat in our bed! No word of a lie, a real life (well dead when I found him at least), BAT! I am guessing that he must have flown in through the bedroom window one night without notice and then tired to hide under the blanket when it got light out the next day.

Most people would say this is pretty gruesome but honestly after the initial shock (after all he was there while we slept for a few nights at least), I got out my camera and snapped a few pics of him. I have never seen one up close and they are pretty wicked looking little creatures!Bat

The truth is, my husband never makes the bed and lately he has been the last one to get up (he is on holiday after all). I usually leave the blanket turned down because the mattress gets damp and I fold the comforter over the foot rail. When I finally decided to pull the cover up onto the bed there I saw this poor wretched creature hanging by a wing that got caught up in the iron foot board.

So in future, I plan to shake things up a bit more before I jump into bed! And I am talking about the covers for any of you whose mind wandered elsewhere : )
